Province Returns 100 Per Cent of Carbon Tax to Langley

LANGLEY – The Province has returned a total of $73,437 in carbon tax dollars to the Township and City of Langley through the Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program.

“The District and City of Langley understand the importance of a greener future which is why they’ve committed to becoming carbon-neutral by 2012,” says Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman. “We are supporting that goal and their climate change projects by giving these tax dollars back.”

“Green initiatives, including supporting our local agriculture industry, are vital to our area,” says Langley MLA Mary Polak. “This is a great example of our governments working together for the health of our communities and reducing B.C.’s carbon footprint.”

The Climate Action Revenue Incentive grant went to:
•    Township of Langley - $65,132
•    City of Langley - $8,305

The Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) is a conditional grant program that returns 100 per cent of carbon tax costs back to communities who have signed on to the Climate Action Charter, pledging to become carbon-neutral by 2012. The funding announced today represents carbon tax payments made from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2009.

The Climate Action Charter is part of the government’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050.
